The stone house
A few words about the traditional architecture of Andros
The natural environment of the Cyclades is extremely sensitive and demanding, something that has a form with a decisive way the architecture local homes through the centuries. Factors such as the abundance of stone, the strong winds, the limited rainfall and the limited economic opportunities due to the small allotments, and the dry land, have lead to the creation of houses with small dimensions, oriented so as to be protected from the wind, with small openings, and made with a forced “additive architecture”.
These traditional features are shown in the architecture design of stone houses. For example, the buildings usually follow the order “C”, which allows for the creation of a protected courtyard to the south, with the building facing the north.
The openings are usually small and are arranged in such a way as to create a natural current of air in the summer, reducing the need for air conditioning. The house is fully constructed from local stone, with walls that often have a thickness of greater than 80 cm.
The stone walls also feature the traditional “plumage”, a thin ledge up to the coronation, which provides additional protection from the rain.

The company was founded by Lorenzo Vrapi and his son Mateo, and it offers a friendly and prompt service as well as general building work of high standards for private and professional spaces.
We have an established team of experienced craftsmen (masons, plasterers, tilers, painters, stonecutters) in the field of construction work, able to handle any construction contracting business, and to serve from, where we are asked to Andros.
